Question

Use of prazosin in benign prostatic hypertrophy

Q91 marksShort Answers

Answer

Prazosin is a selective α1-adrenergic receptor antagonist. In BPH, α1 receptors in the smooth muscle of the prostate capsule, prostatic urethra, and bladder neck contribute to the dynamic component of bladder outlet obstruction. By blocking these receptors, prazosin relaxes prostatic/urethral smooth muscle, reducing urethral resistance and improving urine flow — providing rapid symptomatic relief without reducing prostate size.
