Hofmann elimination

Q121 marksShort Answers

Answer

Hofmann elimination is a spontaneous, non-enzymatic degradation of a drug that occurs in plasma at physiological pH and temperature, independent of hepatic or renal function.

  • Example: Atracurium (a non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocker) is degraded by Hofmann elimination
  • Significance: Makes the drug’s duration of action independent of hepatic/renal disease, making it useful in patients with liver or kidney failure
