Question

Drugs having high first pass metabolism

Q170.2 marksShort Answers

Answer

Glyceryl trinitrate, Propranolol (also Lidocaine, Morphine) — undergo extensive hepatic metabolism on first passage through the liver after oral absorption, substantially reducing oral bioavailability; GTN is therefore given sublingually to bypass this, and propranolol’s oral dose is much higher than its IV dose for the same effect.
