Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a small, non-enveloped, double-stranded DNA virus (family Papillomaviridae) infecting squamous epithelium, with over 200 genotypes classified by oncogenic risk.

Classification: low-risk types (HPV 6, 11) — genital/anogenital warts (condyloma acuminata), common skin warts; high-risk (oncogenic) types (HPV 16, 18, and others) — strongly associated with cervical carcinoma and other anogenital/oropharyngeal cancers.

Pathogenesis: high-risk types encode oncoproteins E6 (inactivates p53) and E7 (inactivates Rb), disrupting cell-cycle control and driving progressive dysplastic change from cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) to invasive carcinoma.

Laboratory diagnosis: Pap smear (cervical cytology) — screening test for dysplastic/koilocytic changes; HPV DNA testing (PCR/hybrid capture) — direct detection/genotyping of high-risk HPV; colposcopy and biopsy for definitive diagnosis of dysplasia/malignancy.

Prevention: HPV vaccination, ideally before onset of sexual activity; regular cervical cancer screening.
