Question
Mention two anabolic steroids. Enumerate the uses and adverse effects of anabolic steroids.
Answer
Two anabolic steroids: Nandrolone, Stanozolol.
Uses: cachexia/wasting states (chronic illness), hereditary angioedema (Danazol), hypogonadism (testosterone replacement), historically for aplastic anemia (largely superseded now). Misused for athletic performance/muscle mass enhancement, an indication with no medical justification.
Adverse effects: virilization in women (hirsutism, voice deepening, menstrual irregularity), hepatotoxicity (particularly with oral 17-alpha-alkylated compounds — cholestatic jaundice, peliosis hepatis, hepatic tumours with long-term use), adverse lipid profile (reduced HDL), premature epiphyseal closure/growth suppression in adolescents, psychiatric effects (aggression, mood disturbance), and suppression of endogenous testosterone/gonadotropin production (testicular atrophy, infertility in men).
