Answer

The choice depends on context: the combined pill (estrogen + progestin) is the standard first-line oral contraceptive for most women, more effective at ovulation suppression. The mini-pill (progestin-only pill) is specifically preferred in lactating mothers and in women with estrogen contraindications (history of thromboembolism, migraine with aura, smokers over 35) — since it avoids estrogen’s effects on milk production and its thrombotic risk, at the cost of a stricter dosing-time requirement and less reliable cycle control.
