Question

Beta blockers in angina

Q81 marksShort Answers

Answer

Beta blockers reduce myocardial oxygen demand by decreasing heart rate, myocardial contractility, and blood pressure, particularly blunting the exercise/stress-induced tachycardia and increased contractility that would otherwise raise oxygen demand. This reduction in oxygen demand relieves anginal symptoms, especially in exertional (stable) angina, and increases exercise tolerance before the ischaemic threshold is reached.
