Question

Radical cure in plasmodium vivax infection

Q81 marksShort Answers

Answer

Radical cure of P. vivax malaria requires eliminating both the blood stage parasites and the dormant hepatic hypnozoites (which cause relapse). This is achieved with a blood schizonticide (e.g., Chloroquine) combined with Primaquine, a tissue schizonticide that eradicates the hypnozoite (exoerythrocytic) forms in the liver, given for 14 days (after excluding G6PD deficiency, as primaquine can cause haemolysis).
