Mechanism of action

  • Inhibit DPP-4, the enzyme that degrades incretin hormones (GLP-1, GIP)
  • Increases active incretin levels, enhancing glucose-dependent insulin secretion and suppressing glucagon secretion

Uses

  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus (monotherapy or combination)

Adverse effects

  • Generally well tolerated: nasopharyngitis, headache
  • Low hypoglycaemia risk (glucose-dependent action)
  • Rare: pancreatitis
  • Weight-neutral
