Mechanism of action
- Inhibit DPP-4, the enzyme that degrades incretin hormones (GLP-1, GIP)
- Increases active incretin levels, enhancing glucose-dependent insulin secretion and suppressing glucagon secretion
Uses
- Type 2 diabetes mellitus (monotherapy or combination)
Adverse effects
- Generally well tolerated: nasopharyngitis, headache
- Low hypoglycaemia risk (glucose-dependent action)
- Rare: pancreatitis
- Weight-neutral
