Question

Insulin analogs

Q63 marksShort Notes

Answer

Insulin analogs are recombinant insulin preparations with modified amino acid sequences that alter their absorption/action profile compared to human insulin.

Rapid-acting analogs (faster onset, shorter duration than regular insulin — used just before/with meals)

  • Insulin lispro
  • Insulin aspart
  • Insulin glulisine

Long-acting analogs (flat, peakless profile — basal insulin)

  • Insulin glargine
  • Insulin detemir
  • Insulin degludec

Advantages over conventional human insulin

  • Rapid-acting analogs: faster onset and shorter duration → better postprandial glucose control, less risk of late postprandial hypoglycaemia, can be given immediately before meals
  • Long-acting analogs: provide steady basal insulin levels without pronounced peaks → lower risk of nocturnal hypoglycaemia
