Question

Beta blockers in angina

Q101 marksShort Answers

Answer

Beta blockers reduce myocardial oxygen demand by decreasing heart rate, myocardial contractility, and blood pressure — all of which lower the workload of the heart, particularly during exertion when sympathetic drive would otherwise increase oxygen demand. By blunting the exercise/stress-induced tachycardia and increase in contractility, beta blockers reduce the frequency and severity of anginal episodes, especially in exertional (stable) angina, and also allow greater exercise tolerance before ischaemic threshold is reached.
