Answer

Amoxicillin, a beta-lactam antibiotic, can be hydrolysed and inactivated by bacterial beta-lactamase enzymes produced by resistant organisms. Clavulanic acid itself has weak/no antibacterial activity but irreversibly inhibits bacterial beta-lactamase, protecting amoxicillin from degradation and thereby restoring/extending its antibacterial spectrum to include beta-lactamase-producing resistant organisms (e.g., resistant Staphylococcus aureus, some H. influenzae, E. coli strains).
