Question
Cotrimoxazole is NOT effective against infections caused by:
- a) Staph aureus
- c) Salmonella typhi
- b) Hemophilus influenzae
- d) Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Qiv1 marksMCQs
Answer
Correct answer: d) Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Cotrimoxazole (sulfamethoxazole + trimethoprim) has no reliable activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which is intrinsically resistant — effective antipseudomonal coverage requires specific agents such as piperacillin-tazobactam, ceftazidime, or an aminoglycoside/fluoroquinolone. Cotrimoxazole does have useful activity against S. aureus, H. influenzae, and S. typhi.
