Question

Mechanism of action of diazepam

Q101 marksShort Answers

Answer

Diazepam binds to a specific benzodiazepine site on the GABA-A receptor complex and enhances GABA-mediated inhibitory neurotransmission by increasing the frequency of chloride channel opening in response to GABA. This increases chloride ion influx, hyperpolarizing the neuron and producing CNS depression (sedative, anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, and muscle relaxant effects).
