Answer
Acyclovir is a guanosine analogue antiviral. It is first phosphorylated to acyclovir monophosphate by the viral enzyme thymidine kinase (present only in virus-infected cells, giving selectivity), then converted to the triphosphate by host cell enzymes. Acyclovir triphosphate competitively inhibits viral DNA polymerase and gets incorporated into the growing viral DNA chain, causing chain termination (it lacks the 3’-OH group needed for further chain elongation).
