Mechanism of action of oseltamivir.

Q121 marksShort Answers

Answer

Oseltamivir is a neuraminidase inhibitor. It blocks the viral enzyme neuraminidase, which is required for the release of newly formed influenza virus particles from infected host cells. By preventing viral release/budding, it limits the spread of infection to adjacent cells, reducing the severity and duration of influenza (A and B) illness when given early in the course of infection.
