Answer

Oseltamivir is a neuraminidase inhibitor.

Mechanism of action

  • Blocks the viral enzyme neuraminidase, required for the release of newly formed influenza virus particles from infected host cells, thereby limiting the spread of infection to adjacent cells

Uses

  • Treatment of influenza A and B (most effective when started within 48 hours of symptom onset)
  • Prophylaxis in exposed high-risk individuals

Adverse effects

  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Headache
  • Neuropsychiatric effects (rare, more reported in paediatric patients)
