Question

Mechanism of action of INH

Q81 marksShort Answers

Answer

Isoniazid (INH) is a prodrug, activated by the mycobacterial enzyme catalase-peroxidase (KatG). The activated form inhibits InhA (an enoyl-ACP reductase), blocking synthesis of mycolic acid, an essential component of the mycobacterial cell wall. This produces a bactericidal effect, particularly against rapidly dividing extracellular mycobacteria.
