Answer

Propofol is an intravenous general anaesthetic.

Properties

  • Rapid onset and rapid recovery (short duration due to fast redistribution/metabolism)
  • Minimal hangover effect — allows quick recovery, suitable for day-care surgery
  • Antiemetic property

Uses

  • Induction and maintenance of general anaesthesia
  • Sedation in ICU (mechanically ventilated patients)
  • Procedural sedation (endoscopy, minor procedures)

Adverse effects

  • Pain at injection site
  • Hypotension and myocardial depression (more pronounced than thiopentone)
  • Respiratory depression/apnoea on induction
  • Propofol infusion syndrome (rare, with prolonged high-dose infusion) — metabolic acidosis, rhabdomyolysis, cardiac failure
  • No analgesic property of its own
