Propofol is an intravenous general anaesthetic.

Properties

  • Rapid onset and rapid recovery
  • Minimal hangover effect — suitable for day-care surgery
  • Antiemetic property

Uses

  • Induction and maintenance of general anaesthesia
  • ICU sedation (mechanically ventilated patients)
  • Procedural sedation

Adverse effects

  • Pain at injection site
  • Hypotension and myocardial depression
  • Respiratory depression/apnoea on induction
  • Propofol infusion syndrome (rare, prolonged high-dose infusion)
  • No analgesic property
