Answer
Premedication is given before general anaesthesia to make induction/maintenance safer and smoother.
Objectives and drugs used
- Anxiolysis/sedation: Benzodiazepines (Diazepam, Midazolam)
- Reduction of secretions/prevention of vagal bradycardia: Anticholinergics (Atropine, Glycopyrrolate)
- Analgesia: Opioids (Morphine, Fentanyl)
- Antiemetic prophylaxis: Ondansetron, Metoclopramide
- Reduction of gastric acidity/aspiration risk: H2 blockers (Ranitidine), Proton pump inhibitors
