Note on pre-anesthetic medication
Given before general anaesthesia to make induction smoother and safer, targeting several objectives: anxiolysis (benzodiazepines — diazepam, midazolam), reduced secretions and vagal reflexes (anticholinergics — glycopyrrolate, atropine), analgesia (opioids — morphine, fentanyl), and antiemetic prophylaxis (ondansetron, metoclopramide). Overall, premedication reduces anxiety, decreases the required dose of the general anaesthetic itself, produces smoother induction/emergence, and extends analgesic/antiemetic cover into the immediate post-operative period.
