Question

Sevoflurane

Q43 marksShort Notes

Answer

Sevoflurane is a halogenated inhalational general anaesthetic.

Properties

  • Low blood-gas solubility → rapid, smooth induction and recovery
  • Pleasant, non-pungent odour — well suited for inhalational induction, especially in children
  • Moderate potency

Effects

  • Mild myocardial depression, less arrhythmogenic than halothane (does not sensitize the heart to catecholamines to the same degree)
  • Bronchodilator
  • Minimal airway irritation

Adverse effects

  • Can be degraded by soda lime to Compound A (nephrotoxic in animal studies; clinical significance in humans debated) — avoided with low fresh gas flows for prolonged periods
  • Postoperative shivering, nausea/vomiting
  • Malignant hyperthermia (rare, as with other halogenated agents)

Widely used for both induction (especially paediatric) and maintenance of anaesthesia due to its favourable safety and recovery profile.
