Question
Methimazole acts by:
- a) Inhibiting thyroid hormone synthesis
- b) Stimulating thyroid hormone release
- c) Destruction of thyroid tissue
- d) Interfering with concentration of iodine by thyroid gland
Qxii1 marksMCQs
Answer
Correct answer: a) Inhibiting thyroid hormone synthesis
Methimazole, a thioamide, inhibits thyroid peroxidase, blocking oxidation/organification of iodide and coupling of iodotyrosines — inhibiting new thyroid hormone synthesis. It does not block iodide uptake/concentration by the gland (that is the mechanism of perchlorate, a different drug class) and does not destroy thyroid tissue (unlike radioactive iodine).
