Question
Monoclonal antibodies and their uses
Q9 4 marks Short Answers ★ ✓
Answer
Monoclonal antibodies are laboratory-produced antibodies engineered to bind a single, specific target antigen with high selectivity.
Infliximab, Adalimumab (anti-TNF-alpha) — rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, psoriasis.
Rituximab (anti-CD20) — non-Hodgkin lymphoma, rheumatoid arthritis (B-cell depletion).
Trastuzumab (anti-HER2) — HER2-positive breast cancer.
Bevacizumab (anti-VEGF) — colorectal and other cancers, blocking tumour angiogenesis.
Omalizumab (anti-IgE) — severe allergic asthma.
Palivizumab (anti-RSV) — prophylaxis against respiratory syncytial virus in high-risk infants.
Their high target specificity generally gives a more favorable adverse-effect profile than conventional cytotoxic/broad-immunosuppressive agents, though infusion reactions and increased infection risk (from targeted immune pathway suppression) remain class-wide concerns.
