Question
Verapamil in paroxysmal supra ventricular tachycardia
Q101 marksShort Answers
Answer
Verapamil blocks L-type calcium channels in the AV node, slowing AV nodal conduction and prolonging its refractory period. Since paroxysmal SVT commonly involves a re-entrant circuit through the AV node, this AV nodal blockade interrupts the re-entrant pathway, terminating the arrhythmia and restoring normal sinus rhythm — making verapamil (alongside adenosine) an effective acute treatment for PSVT.
