Give two examples of live attenuated vaccines.

Q132 marksShort Notes

Answer

Two examples of live attenuated vaccines (vaccines containing a weakened form of the live pathogen, which replicates in the host without causing full-blown disease, generating a robust and durable immune response, often after a single dose):

  1. BCG (Bacille Calmette-Guérin) vaccine — a live attenuated strain of Mycobacterium bovis, protecting particularly against severe childhood forms of tuberculosis.
  2. Oral polio vaccine (OPV) — contains live attenuated poliovirus strains, given orally, inducing both systemic and local intestinal (mucosal IgA) immunity.

(Other valid examples: MMR vaccine — measles, mumps, rubella; varicella vaccine; yellow fever vaccine; oral typhoid vaccine, Ty21a.)
