Answer
- [x] c) Cellular component
Pneumococcal vaccines are component (subunit) vaccines, using purified capsular material rather than the whole organism: the Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV), covering the most common invasive serotypes, uses capsular polysaccharide conjugated to a carrier protein (converting the response to T-dependent, effective even in infants), while the Pneumococcal Polysaccharide Vaccine (PPSV23) uses plain capsular polysaccharide from 23 serotypes. Neither is a live attenuated vaccine, a whole killed-cell vaccine, or a toxoid vaccine (pneumococcal disease is capsule/invasion-driven, not primarily toxin-mediated in the manner that would call for a toxoid approach).
