Answer

Both are H2 receptor antagonists effective in peptic ulcer disease, but ranitidine is generally preferred over cimetidine — cimetidine is a potent CYP450 inhibitor (raising levels of numerous co-administered drugs, including warfarin, phenytoin, and theophylline) and has antiandrogenic activity (gynecomastia, reduced libido with prolonged use), neither of which ranitidine shares to a clinically significant degree, giving ranitidine a cleaner interaction and adverse-effect profile for routine use.
