Question

Enumerate the four phases of bacterial growth curve.

Q112 marksShort Notes

Answer

The four phases of the bacterial growth curve (when a bacterial culture is inoculated into fresh liquid medium):

  1. Lag phase — little/no increase in cell number, but cells are metabolically active, adapting to the new medium and synthesizing components needed for rapid growth.
  2. Log (exponential) phase — cells divide at a constant, maximal rate, cell number increasing exponentially; the phase of choice for antibiotic susceptibility testing and most physiological studies.
  3. Stationary phase — growth rate plateaus as new cell division equals cell death, due to nutrient depletion and toxic waste accumulation; some organisms produce secondary metabolites and endospores during this phase.
  4. Decline (death) phase — viable cell count progressively falls as nutrient exhaustion and toxic waste accumulation cause cell death to exceed division.
