Answer

A transdermal therapeutic system (TTS) is a drug delivery system in the form of a patch applied to the skin, designed to deliver the drug at a controlled, predetermined rate into the systemic circulation via percutaneous absorption.

Advantages

• Avoids first-pass hepatic metabolism
• Provides sustained, steady plasma drug levels, avoiding peaks and troughs
• Improves patient compliance (infrequent application, e.g., once every few days)
• Can be discontinued easily by simply removing the patch, terminating drug delivery
• Non-invasive, painless

Limitations

• Suitable only for potent, lipophilic drugs with low daily dose requirement
• Slow onset of action — unsuitable for emergencies
• Local skin irritation/allergic reactions at the application site
