Question

Rationale for the combined use of aluminium and magnesium salts in antacid preparations.

Q81 marksShort Answers

Answer

Aluminium hydroxide is constipating while magnesium hydroxide is laxative (causes diarrhoea). Combining the two in antacid preparations allows their opposing effects on bowel motility to cancel each other out, minimizing the net effect on bowel habit while maintaining effective acid-neutralizing capacity.
