Question
Tetracycline/Amoxicillin n pharyngitis for a 5-year-old child
Q130.2 marksShort Answers
Answer
Amoxicillin is the appropriate choice — tetracyclines are contraindicated in children under 8 years, given the risk of permanent tooth discoloration and impaired bone growth from deposition in developing calcified tissue. Amoxicillin has no such age restriction and provides effective coverage for streptococcal pharyngitis, the predominant treatable bacterial cause in this age group.
