Question

Immunotherapy for Rh negative woman with Rh positive baby

Q111 marksShort Answers

Answer

Anti-D immunoglobulin (Rh immunoglobulin) is given IM to an Rh-negative mother within 72 hours of delivery of an Rh-positive baby (and after any sensitizing event during pregnancy, e.g., abortion, amniocentesis). It works by binding to and clearing fetal Rh-positive red cells that have entered the maternal circulation before the mother’s immune system can mount its own antibody response, thereby preventing maternal sensitization and haemolytic disease of the newborn in subsequent pregnancies.
