Question
Linezolid
Q53 marksShort Notes
Answer
Linezolid is an oxazolidinone antibiotic.
Mechanism of action
Binds to the 23S rRNA of the 50S ribosomal subunit, preventing formation of the initiation complex for bacterial protein synthesis (a unique mechanism, distinct from other protein synthesis inhibitors)
Spectrum/uses
Active against Gram-positive organisms including MRSA and VRE (vancomycin-resistant enterococci)
Reserved for multidrug-resistant Gram-positive infections
Adverse effects
Thrombocytopenia/myelosuppression with prolonged use
Peripheral/optic neuropathy (prolonged use)
Serotonin syndrome (weak MAO inhibitor — caution with SSRIs)
