Clarithromycin, a macrolide antibiotic, binds reversibly to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis by blocking translocation (movement of the ribosome along mRNA) — producing a bacteriostatic (occasionally bactericidal at high concentrations against very susceptible organisms) effect.
