Methods:
Direct flaming — passing an object (e.g., inoculating wire loop, mouth of a culture tube, forceps tip) directly through a Bunsen burner flame until red hot; used routinely in the microbiology laboratory for sterilizing inoculating loops/needles between uses.
Flaming with spirit lamp — similarly used for smaller items in resource-limited settings.
Incinerators (large-scale) — high-temperature furnaces (typically 800–1200°C, sometimes higher for hazardous/infectious waste) used to destroy biomedical waste such as pathological/anatomical waste (amputated tissue, placenta), soiled dressings, disposable plastics contaminated with infectious material, and animal carcasses used in research.
Advantages: guarantees complete destruction of even highly resistant spores and prions (at sufficiently high temperature) and permanently reduces waste volume.
Limitations: not applicable to reusable instruments (destroys the material); produces smoke/ash requiring proper environmental controls (air pollution, incomplete combustion by-products); a modern biomedical-waste-management concern is ensuring incinerators reach and maintain adequate temperature to avoid release of toxic emissions (e.g., dioxins from inadequately controlled combustion of chlorinated plastics).
