The D-dimer test is the most specific/diagnostic single investigation for DIC among those listed — it directly reflects both thrombin generation (fibrin formation) and plasmin generation (fibrinolysis of that fibrin), which is the pathognomonic combination in DIC. Platelet count, PT, and thrombin time are all abnormal in DIC but are non-specific, being deranged in many other bleeding disorders as well.
