Ki-67 is a nuclear protein expressed in all active phases of the cell cycle (G1, S, G2, M) but absent in resting (G0) cells, used immunohistochemically as a proliferation marker to assess the growth fraction of a tumour — a higher Ki-67 labelling index generally correlates with more aggressive tumour behaviour and is used both diagnostically (e.g., grading neuroendocrine tumours) and prognostically (e.g., in breast carcinoma).
