Question
Mention adverse effects of Aminoglycosides
Q94 marksShort Answers
Answer
- Nephrotoxicity — reversible, from proximal tubular accumulation of the drug.
- Ototoxicity — often irreversible, vestibular and/or cochlear damage; risk increases with prolonged use, high doses, and concurrent loop diuretics.
- Neuromuscular blockade — at high doses, can potentiate/mimic non-depolarizing muscle relaxants, particularly relevant peri-operatively.
- Hypersensitivity reactions — less common than with beta-lactams, but can occur.
