Q94 marksShort Answers

Answer

  • Nephrotoxicity — reversible, from proximal tubular accumulation of the drug.
  • Ototoxicity — often irreversible, vestibular and/or cochlear damage; risk increases with prolonged use, high doses, and concurrent loop diuretics.
  • Neuromuscular blockade — at high doses, can potentiate/mimic non-depolarizing muscle relaxants, particularly relevant peri-operatively.
  • Hypersensitivity reactions — less common than with beta-lactams, but can occur.
