Two examples of pigment-producing bacteria (other than the classic golden-yellow pigment of Staphylococcus aureus ):
Pseudomonas aeruginosa — produces the water-soluble blue-green pigment pyocyanin (along with the fluorescent yellow-green pigment pyoverdin/fluorescein), imparting a characteristic blue-green colour and a sweet, grape-like/fruity odour to culture plates and to infected wound exudate/dressings — a useful presumptive clue to its identification.
Serratia marcescens — produces a distinctive brick-red/pink pigment (prodigiosin) on culture at room temperature (pigment production is typically better at 20–25°C than at 37°C); historically noted for causing dramatic red discolouration of food (bread, communion wafers) that was sometimes mistaken for blood in folklore, and is an important cause of nosocomial infection (urinary tract, respiratory, bloodstream) as an opportunistic Gram-negative pathogen.
(Other valid examples: Micrococcus luteus — yellow pigment; Chromobacterium violaceum — violet pigment.)
