An LE (lupus erythematosus) cell is a neutrophil (or macrophage) that has phagocytosed the denatured, homogenized nuclear material (nucleoprotein) of another cell that has been opsonized by antinuclear antibodies present in the serum of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus — seen on the LE cell test, a historical diagnostic test for SLE now largely replaced by ANA testing.
