Question
Oxytocin for induction of labour
Q81 marksShort Answers
Answer
Oxytocin binds to specific oxytocin receptors on the myometrium, which increase in density as pregnancy progresses to term, causing rhythmic uterine smooth muscle contraction. Given as a titratable IV infusion, it allows controlled initiation and progression of uterine contractions that mimic physiological labour, making it the standard drug used for induction (and augmentation) of labour when spontaneous labour needs to be initiated or strengthened.
