Q102 marksShort Notes

Answer

Two complications of Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV) infection:

  1. Post-herpetic neuralgia — persistent pain in the affected dermatome after resolution of the herpes zoster rash, particularly common and severe in elderly patients.
  2. Varicella pneumonia — a serious complication of primary varicella (chickenpox) infection, particularly in adults and immunocompromised patients.

(Other valid examples: congenital varicella syndrome, if maternal infection occurs during pregnancy; secondary bacterial skin infection; encephalitis/cerebellar ataxia; ophthalmic zoster with risk of vision loss if the ophthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve is involved.)
