An Aschoff body is a focus of fibrinoid necrosis surrounded by lymphocytes, plasma cells, and activated macrophages called Anitschkow cells (with characteristic “caterpillar” nuclei) — the pathognomonic lesion of acute rheumatic fever, found in the myocardium (and can also be seen in other layers of the heart during active rheumatic carditis).
