Paper I
Question
What is Barrett esophagus.
Answer
Barrett oesophagus is a premalignant condition in which the normal stratified squamous epithelium of the distal oesophagus undergoes metaplastic replacement by columnar epithelium with goblet cells (intestinal-type metaplasia), occurring as an adaptive response to chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It carries an increased risk of progression to dysplasia and oesophageal adenocarcinoma.
