Question

What is Barr body.

Q201 marks

Answer

A Barr body is the condensed, inactivated X chromosome seen as a small, densely staining chromatin mass at the nuclear periphery in the somatic cells of normal females (who have two X chromosomes, one of which is randomly inactivated — X-inactivation/Lyon hypothesis). The number of Barr bodies equals the number of X chromosomes minus one.
