Four viruses causing diarrhoea:

  1. Rotavirus — the leading cause of severe dehydrating diarrhoea in infants and young children worldwide; a double-stranded RNA virus (family Reoviridae); prevented by rotavirus vaccine.
  2. Norovirus — a leading cause of acute gastroenteritis outbreaks in all age groups (including notable outbreaks on cruise ships and in healthcare settings), a calicivirus, highly contagious with a low infectious dose.
  3. Adenovirus (enteric serotypes 40/41) — an important cause of diarrhoea in young children.
  4. Astrovirus — causes mild-to-moderate diarrhoea, particularly in young children and the elderly.
