What is the difference between hypertrophy and hyperplasia
Answer
Hypertrophy is an increase in the size of individual cells (and hence the organ), without an increase in cell number, typically due to increased functional demand or hormonal stimulation. Hyperplasia is an increase in the number of cells in an organ or tissue, occurring in cells capable of division, usually resulting in an increase in organ size. The two often occur together in physiological/compensatory settings (e.g., in the pregnant uterus, both hypertrophy and hyperplasia of smooth muscle cells occur).
